How to Set Up a Home Wi-FI Network

Setting up a wireless network might sound tough but when it is just setting up a home network, a little instruction guide will remove all your fears. We have often seen homes with Wifi setup that saves us from tons of wires and sometimes data charges on phones, especially smartphones. A lots of our daily used devices like smartphones, tablets, laptops has wifi, which we do not use. But in some very easy steps we can make our home a wifi zone and use internet on our devices without the hassle of wires and with a single broadband connection! For that we will need,

1. Of course an internet connection
2. A wireless router (now many are available at prices like $40 or less)
3. Wifi devices

The steps are very easy. At the back of any wireless router, you will find two kinds of ports beside the power adapter port. One should be labelled as WAN, where you will have to plug in the Broadband or DSL jack that you would connect at the back of your PC before.

The other ports are labelled as LAN, where you can connect your desktop computer which usually does not have wifi connectivity.

The hardest part of this setup is configuring the router which is actually not so hard. In order to do that, open a web browser of that connected PC and enter 192.168.1.1 in any web browser that will open your router's control panel. There, you will be guided with step by step setup that varies for different router brands and models. You will have to put the IP address, Getaway and DNS provided by your internet connection provider. There, you will be able to select the SSID by which the other wifi devices will identify the wireless network and a password.

After finishing these steps, it should be easy to find the network with other wifi enabled devices and use the internet by joining with the password.

Gender Selection: Between Ethics and Science

One of the most sensitive aspect of medical science is of course the reproductive one. Technology has decreased the rate of infant mortality to a great extent. But now, a time has come where we have to decide about the use of technology in some cases. In the last few years, reproduction technology has allowed us to choose the gender of the yet to be born child and most of the time it is successful, but, it is not 100% perfect yet. So there is a risk that the child may not be of the expected gender and there might be psychological problems with the child who might think that he/she is unwanted. This is a big risk and the parents should be prepared for a child of any gender.

In many countries there are still people who believe a boy is more useful than a girl and raising a girl is a total waste of money. Therefore, this type of society is not ready for gender selection as we can see there are many countries already that have higher ratio of men in comparison to women. On the other hand we can prevent many disease to be transferred to the newborn from his or her parents by genetic engineering. It is like dynamite. It can be used to blow mountains to make highways or it can be used to kill innocents. It depends on the user. Therefore, the innovation should never stop. One thing we can do is to spread the proper use of those innovations and make those beneficial for all. This is what science and technology are for!

Meg Whitman: The Present CEO of HP and Famous Ex CEO of eBay

Meg Whitman is a very famous and old name in the field of technology. She was born in New York and graduated in Princeton University and Harvard Business School. She has been in vital position in various big technological industries like Hasbro, DreamWorks, etc. But she came to spotlight after being the CEO and President of eBay. She just did not just work in the company; she stayed there successfully for 11 long years and expanded it to an unimaginable new height. Before her joining, eBay had only 30 employees and $4 million annual revenue and when she left, it had a staggering annual revenue of $8 billion and 15,000 of employees. That shows that, Meg Whitman is not just another women who became a head of any technological company. In fact, she is the one who has made eBay what it is today.

Meg Whitman is now the CEO of HP, another big company that has nothing to be introduced. However, HP is now facing a huge pressure from every side of their business as they have some big failed projects including the catastrophic TouchPad. They have taken some huge decisions like shutting the entire hardware production and the investors are now very concerned. They have removed their previous CEO and now they have appointed Meg Whitman as their new CEO. This action shows that how much people believe on her ability. She is an icon of a successful CEO not only for the women, but also for everyone. She also joined the Giving Pledge program where many billionaires have donated a huge portion of their wealth by giving away half of her money. This list includes many famous people like Mark Zuckerberg and other famous entrepreneurs.
Meg Whitman has been a great inspiration for the women in technology and she is still doing a great job at her present position. She is not only a woman who could do, she is someone who is to be followed.

Future of HCI: The End of Gender Gap

Videos imagining the future is not an uncommon attempt while posting videos. This is one of the bests of them but that is not the reason of posting it here. It is posted here because it is one of the most possible and realistic videos created by the people from the company with the vision, Microsoft. The whole video is full of beautifully elegant Human Computer Interactions that is full of innovations. If we look at the UI (User Interface), we will see that those are designed in such a way that nobody of no gender should face any difficulty using those. And the used interfaces are not very far from what it is today. Looking at the latest mobile operating systems like iOS 5 and Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich, we can surely say that. As the researchers found out, we can observe the use of bigger icons and simplistic interface that does not only increase the efficiency of the women but also for the men. In fact, the efficiency of both gender in such interface will be equal. That's when the gender gap vanishes and that is the day we dream of.

Technology and Social Progress: What Happens to the Women?

Technology has always been considered as the core of social progress for a long, long time. The question is what do we mean by social progress. If we say the technological advancement and economic progress are the only things then the concept is right but what if we think of humanity? Technological advancements are shaped by the society and by society I mean the dominants of the society. The men have always ruled the society in the past years and the influence is visible in the field of technology too. In the most important fields like economy and politics the women are still not participating that much even in the developed countries and it is applicable for the women of the countries with less gender gap too. In my lifetime there has been around 30 female presidents/prime ministers among more than 200 presidents/prime ministers which is really lower than the expectation though I feel encouraged sometimes looking at my own country which is a developing one and yet there has been no male prime minister in this country for more than 15 years! This should be a great example of female leadership for all the countries where the women are oppressed.

The most usual position of the women in the tech industry and corporate world is the position of receptionist, reporter or PA. If we try to find them on the top there will be examples but that is too less than the men. Women have already proved their merit and skill in the field of science and studies. Now it is time to use that merit in the practical field, time to take decisions for the nations, time to contribute equally in the national and the global economy. In the developed countries the women need to step ahead and in the developing and under developed countries everyone else should try so that they can step ahead. If the current trend continues in the same way then it will take too many years to erase the thick line of gender gap and we will not be there to witness the great success with our own eyes. We need change to make them happen. We need initiative.
